Position and climate
Puerto de Mogan is situated on the southwest coast of the island of Gran Canaria. This picturesque fishing village is said to have the best climate in the world. In the winter, daylight hours are longer than those in Europe and the temperature is few degrees lower. During summer, the temperature goes from twenty to mid thirty degrees. Because of the many channels between the marina and the harbor, this village is often called the "Venice of the Canaries". It was built on an old settlement, a village called Playa de Mogán, which had small houses and narrow passageways. But the building of modern apartment buildings on the beach started eight years ago. The sand was imported from the Sahara. Its golden color was meant to change the black color of the volcanic sand. Next to the beach, there are many restaurants with a variety of cuisines, domestic and international.
Leisure & Pleasure
For those who are looking for an exciting vacation, taking a boat trip to watch dolphins in the open sea is the right thing to do. There are also boat trips to the nearby places - Puerto Rico and Arguineguín. Puerto de Mogan is a place where tourists can practice many water sports - they can hire jet skis, go on fishing excursions or explore the local wreck. Diving center offers courses and a sailing school offers accredited classes, so all the visitors who are eager to learn some new skills during the vacation are welcome. Many sailors came to Puerto de Mogan on their way across the Atlantic Ocean.
Those visitors who like to do some shopping during the vacation find this place a shopping paradise. In Puerto de Mogan there are many supermarkets and shops for selling clothes, shoes, souvenirs and jewelry. There are also many beauty salons or studios where the tourists can get a haircut or a tattoo. Two hundred meters away from the beach, there is a new shopping center that has an interesting architectural design. For those who like leather goods, African drums, cheap jewelry and second-hand clothes, there is an open-air market. It opens on Fridays and offers the visitors an ideal place to show their skills for bargaining.
Places to stay and eat
In Puerto de Mogan visitors can stay in luxurious hotels or in new apartments near the beach with swimming pools. "Spanish quarter" is an area where you can rent an apartment with a garden, a pool or with access to a roof terrace. Puerto de Mogan's restaurants offer Canarian, Spanish, Italian, German and Chinese specialties. Local bars have live music which is not too loud.

Places of interest in Spain-Segovia Alcazar
The first mention
Alcazar is an outstanding fortification in Segovia. This fortification was built to protect the city but later on became the royal residence and prison. Today it is a Royal Artillery College. Archaeological excavations show that Celtic tribes were settled on this site. Then the Romans came. The first mention of the Alcazar of Segovia was at the beginning of the 12th century. This was the period of the Arab influence on Spain, but 30 years later the fortification became Christian again. Before the King Alfonso VIII and his wife Eleanor came to the throne in the 12th century, the building was made of wood. After the King and Queen made Alcazar their residence, they started a lot of work in order to make this building a pleasant place to live in.
History of the fortification
The fortress became a favorite residence of Spanish kings. At the end of the 13th century, King Alfonso X made his own contribution to the fortress and built the Hall of Kings and the house of Parliament. The most important contributor to the building was John II. His famous 'New Tower' is visible even today. When the King Henry IV died at the end of the 15th century, his successor Isabella I of Castile escaped from Madrid and was crowned as Queen of Castile and Leon in the Alcazar. The next contributors to the castle were King Philip II and his wife Queen Anna from Austria. They added the sharp slate spires to the castle. When the royal establishment decided to move to Madrid, the Alcazar became a prison. At the end of the 19th century, the fortification was devastated by fire. Using the old sketches, it was rebuilt in 1882.
Interior
The interior of the Alcazar of Segovia is decorated with luxury. Entering the fortification from the Lion gate shows an impressive view of many palaces, corridors and gardens. The main building inside the fortification is the Royal Palace - the oldest royal palace in Europe. It consists of several smaller palaces and shows the perfect match between many different artistic influences: Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo. Inside the Palace, there are three important rooms: the Hall of Kings, the Hall of the Throne and the Hall of Ajimeces. The Galley Chamber has magnificent paintings. One section of the wall of the Chamber shows Queen Isabella's coronation. In the Throne Hall, two thrones are visible. In front of them is inscribed - "Tanto Monta" (it makes no odds). The image of Henry IV is not old, but modern work as the ceiling - restored after the original one was destroyed in fire. All the halls are surrounded with beautiful gardens.
Islamic, classical and modern influences are visible in the gardens. Apart from beautiful flowers and fountains, there are modern baths and statues placed in them.
If you climb up to the main tower, you can see a magnificent view of the city.

About Antoni Gaudi
Antoni Gaudi (Antoni Gaudi i Cornet) was a Catalan architect famous for his unique style and highly individualistic designs.
Gaudi was born in the small town of Reus, the province of Taragon (Spain) in 1852. The towns Riudoms and Reus are now competing about his place of birth, although most of his biographers believe that he was born in Reus. His parents were Francesc Serra and Antonio Gaudi Cornet Bertran.
Gaudi was the youngest of five children and since early days he was sick with rheumatism. Most often due to pain he could not walk, so he had to ride a donkey.
Gaudi was not among the best students, but he showed a particular interest in geometry. Gaudi studied architecture at the Higher Technical School of Architecture (Tcnica La Escuela Superior de Arquitectura) in Barcelona from 1873 till 1877.
Casa Mila
Casa Mila is popularly known as La Pedrera (since people call it “quarry”). It was designed by Antoni Gaudi. It was built between 1906 and 1910. The style of the building is Catalan modernism. It is located on Paseo de Grasija (Catalan Passeig de Gràcia) in the center of Barcelona. A wealthy man, Pedro Mila was impressed by the Casa Battló (Gaudi’s previous work), so he asked Guadi to work on his new house as well.
Exterior
The house was built in the untypical style with few straight lines and surfaces and many curves. It gives an impression of the desert dunes or sea waves. The whole facade is made of natural stone, except the roof, which is covered with white ceramic tiles. The combination of stone and white tile gives the impression of a mountain under snow. On the roof there are stair exits and chimneys, which are covered with broken glass bottles that look like the heads of warriors with helmets.
The beauty of the building is emphasized by the wrought iron balconies in the shape of liana. The house has five floors, the ceiling is decorated with arches and a flat roof already mentioned as well as two large inner courtyards and several smaller ones.
Today this house is owned by a savings bank which has undertaken the work of conservation and restoration several times. Only the fourth floor ceiling and roof terrace of the house are open to the public. On other floors are offices. However, old Catalan families still live in some of them. In 1984, UNESCO declared La Pedrera as a world heritage site.

About Barcelona

Montjuic
Montjuic is a small hill which has historical and cultural value. It is located near the port and its top is a former military fortress. It also guards the entrance from the sea to the city. On its slopes are situated the following facilities:
which was designed by the architect Pere Domènech i Roura. It was opened in 1929 for the Universal Exposition of Barcelona.

Attractions

Plaza Mayor
Almodovar’s Madrid is not crowded with hordes of tourists. He highlights unfamiliar neighborhoods, secluded street, hidden bars and almost deserted squares. However, there is an exception - Plaza Mayor. The square was used as decor for the most touchable scene in the film Flower of my Secret (La Flor de mi secreto, 1995).
After a flamenco performance, a journalist Angel plays in the rhythm of flamenco for writer Leo, on a completely deserted square in the middle of the night. However, this scene is far from realistic, since Madrid, and especially this square is fully alive all night.
Plaza Mayor is Madrid’s central square. It occupies an area of 129m x 94m. In addition it is the most popular tourist attraction.
Viaduct de Bailén

This Barcelona attraction, Montjuic, is situated on the top of a small mountain just outside the city. It is a known fact that Barcelona is one of the European cities famous for its parks. Barcelona is surrounded by mountains and hills, some of them being quite far, but Montjuic is just outside the city on the location of the old side of Barcelona.

Just in front of the National Palace is the location of the Magical Fountain of Montjuic. This Magical Fountain offers an impressive spectacle involving water, music and lights. The first show of this kind took place in 1929 on the occasion of the Universal Grand Exhibit. When the person who put up the show presented his idea, everyone thought that it was practically impossible to realize it in less than a year. To get it done, more than 3000 people were mobilized. When water, colors, movement, lights and music come together, an incredible spectacle of pure magic reveals itself. This show should not be missed when visiting Barcelona.
The unique positioning of the Montjuic Park ensures an incredible view of Barcelona. In the park, visitors can admire the gardens, the castle, the Olympic village of the 1992 Olympics and many other things. For approximately 20 € a person can visit all the museums in Montjuic, rent a bicycle and swim in the Olympic swimming pool. For this price a train ride is also included, especially for tourists.
The schedule of the Magical Fountain of Montjuic is as follows: from October until April the shows take place on Friday and Saturday and from May until September the shows take place on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at specific hours. The show is free of charge but almost always, many people gather at the nearby terraces to watch the show, so arriving early is a wise thing.
The easiest way to reach Montjuic is the subway: red line (L1) or green line (L3) – station Espanya. Alternative way to get there is the funicular railway.

Moors and Christians - Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos
Between the 21st and 24th April, Alcoy is dressed in its finery to celebrate the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos in honor of its patron St. George.
According to chronicles, on the 23rd April in 1276 the miraculous help of Sant Jordi saved Alcoy from attack by the armies of Al-Azraq, leader of the Moorish rebellion. Since then, Alcoy has celebrated various religious and popular festivals in honor of its savior.
The Apparition of Saint George
Alcoy was conquered by the Arabs in the middle of the thirteenth century but King James I annexed it to the Kingdom of Valencia. James I sent his stocking with 28 Christian settlers. However, the hosts of the Crescent had not yet said their last word. Several groups of Arabic warriors were frightening the whole region with their frequent looting and attacks on Christian villages. For this reason James I sent 40 of his knights to defend Alcoy.
On the 23rd April, 1276 the Moors with their leader Al-Azraq (Arabic for "the Blue" because he had blue eyes) prepared to attack the village. Torregrossa Mossén, before the war, encouraged the troops and invoked the saint of the day at St. George. During the attack, when all seemed lost for Christians, a gentleman appeared on the battlements of the castle on a white horse with a cross on his chest and caused heavy casualties on the side of the Crescent. Muslims identified him as Wali, holy warrior from their religion, and Christians as St. George or Sant Jordi (in Catalan).
From that day Alcoy’s patron is Saint George. Moreover, every year there is a feast in his honor.
The cult of St. George
Initially the festival of Sant Jordi was celebrated as a religious holiday but gradually other popular events such as competitions and musket firing crossbow were incorporated.
Thus in 1668, Vicente Carbonell wrote about some of the events held on the feast of the patron in his "Celebrity Century". This is the first written reference to the Moors and Christians. A party handed down from father to son has survived to this day marked by the entrepreneurial and festive spirit of Alcoy, but without losing the religious nature of its beginnings.
The figure of St George, which was worshiped by the rest of the East and West Catholics, was the same everywhere: St. George and the dragon. This continued until the mid-nineteenth century.
The religious festival begins with the procession of the Transfer, where devotees move out the image of Sant Jordi "the Xicotet" from his temple to the church of Santa Maria. On the 18th, 19th and 20th April there is a solemn worship of the patron in the parish of Santa Maria called the Triduum. The 23rd of April is completely dedicated to the patron- the day of Sant Jordi.

More Festivals - Moors and Christians
Filaes
The consolidation of the groups of revelers in 'filaes' began in 1786 due to the increasing number of participants at the party.
The Association of Sant Jordi was responsible for promoting the cult of the patron. They were also responsible for ensuring their temple and organizing annual festivals in Sant Jordi honor. They also had certain autonomy. Thus "filaes' were born for the Moors and Christians. The members of filaes have distinctive dresses and 'rows'. The aim of these groups was to bring friends to participate together in the festival.

Castle
The Moors and Christians festival is celebrated in other locations but the most famous is the Alcoy of Valencia due to its great tradition, organization and purity.
The castle appears on the party in the eighteenth century to give more brilliance to the representation of the struggle of Christians against the followers of Al-Azraq. The first castle that was built was small and moreover it was made of coarse cloth and pieces of wood. Next to it were built small houses to represent the town of Alcoy.
In 1799, Joaquin Verdú, mayor of Alcoy, got a note from the Devotees of San Jorge (the Association of Saint George) where they announced the construction of a castle at their own expense since they wanted the castle to be more realistic.
Fernando Cabrera designed the new castle built by the Aznar brothers. The castle, which was shown for the first time in 1895, is in usage even today. It weighs 25 tons. During the war it was stored and its metal structure was used for making to a bomb shelter in the Plaza Emilio Sala.
After the war, the metallurgical company Rodes Asociació Brothers gave Sant Jordi a new metal structure and raised the castle again in 1944.

The Picasso Museum or “Museu Picasso” for the locals is a well-known museum, a worldwide landmark in art in Barcelona, Spain. The museum is located in the Gothic area and includes five medieval palaces connected together to make a museum.
The Pablo Ruiz Picasso Museum has become one of the most visited museums in Barcelona and Spain thanks to one of the famous 20th century artists, co-founder of cubism and a genius who opened up the era of modern art.
The Sabartés Collectionor, as the museum was initially called, was inaugurated on the 9th of March, 1963. Jaume Sabartés was Picasso’s lifelong friend and the idea for the museum came from him. The initial location of the museum was to be Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace, but the painter insisted on changing it to Barcelona due to his connections with the city.
The original collection was made up of Sabartés donations: paintings, prints and drawings given by Picasso during the course of their friendship. After Sabartés’ death in 1968, Picasso donated approximately 1000 items to the museum. The Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona also donated Picasso’s works. Nowadays the collection reveals for permanent exhibition over 3500 works including other gifts from Picasso’s friends and collectors.
Being one of the most important and visited museums in Spain, the museum opens its doors to anyone who is interested in making contact with the masterpieces that it shelters. It welcomes tourists from Tuesday to Sunday but on Mondays it is closed. It is also closed on the 1st of January and May, 24th of June and on the first two days of Christmas. On the 11th of February, May 18 and September 24, the entrance is free. Admission costs € 5.8 for temporary exhibition and € 9 for museum and temporary exhibition. Guided tours for the permanent collection in English are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday every week.
It is easy to reach the museum by bus or by car - the museum does not have its own car park. The nearest car parks are Carrer Princesa, Plaça de la Catedral, Passeig del Born and Avinguda Cambó. For foreigners, the El Prat Airport in Barcelona represents the right way to reach it.

One of the less known but worth-a-visit towns of Spain is Vitoria, the capital of the Spanish Basque Country. It is a tranquil and approachable province capital, overshadowed by Bilbao and the glamorous San Sebastián. But there are some nice surprises waiting here for you!
The old town called Almendra, meaning the almond-shaped medieval quarter on a hilltop, is one of the best preserved in Spain. It has been virtually ignored even by Vitorians until recently. This proves now to be an advantage for modern travellers, who may find one of the few quiet and not commercialized medieval quarters in Europe.
The highlight of the medieval Almendra is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which is “Open for restoration works”. Open, yes, and not closed, as you might think.
Some 40 years ago, the building had to be closed after a quite big stone fell from the ceiling and almost killed a catholic priest who was holding a wedding ceremony. 20 years later, the town council was having thoughts about tearing the church down because the whole structure was collapsing. But they took a valiant decision: to try to consolidate the whole building using an innovative concept. The cathedral would remain open to visitors during the restoration, offering the possibility to watch and learn from the undergoing work. The concept proved to be a huge success and nowadays it has become a meeting point for history-fans, especially medieval history, since author Ken Follet (The Pillars of the Earth) entered this cathedral in intensive care and left the place as an absolute enthusiast.
To reinforce the foundations, the existing floor had to be removed in order to reach the rocky hilltop. Layer after layer, archaeologists discovered that Vitoria is actually far older than believed. Travellers and visitors from Spain and abroad can watch the ongoing work, walking on gangways above the workers.
The tour is always guided by one of the young archaeologists working here, who explains the technical and historical facts in a language for profanes. You will also have a catwalk along the outer walls of the church which were part of the medieval walls and climb up a ladder to see the paintings of a Romanesque portal being restored to its impressive original colours while preserving the bullet impacts of Napoleonic troops during the peninsular war in Spain at the beginning of the 19th century. These impacts are also part of Vitoria´s history, since the final battle in this war took place in its outskirts.

The castle situated on the top of the adjoining hill is also believed to have been built during the medieval period. From the top of the castle, tourists can have a glimpse of the beautiful natural sceneries. History also speaks of many wars being fought to take control of the castle. Celts, Romans, Moors, Iberians have all fought for this castle. The castle has been rebuilt and renovated after each war.
